OUR 2020 SEASON ANNOUNCEMENT
“Something old, something new, and something strange that might come true!”
URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL
Music and Lyrics by MARK HOLLMANN
Book and Lyrics by GREG KOTIS
Directed by JON ROSEN
Choreography by CELESTE LOCOCO
Music Direction by CHRISTOPHER HEWITT
February 1 – March 15, 2020
It’s a strange new world where everyone has to pay to pee. A winner of three Tony Awards, URINETOWN is an hilarious musical satire of capitalism, the legal system, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theatre itself. It is perfect for our treacherous times! Nominated for 10 Tony awards in 2001, it won for its Book, Score and Direction. Both funny and bitingly honest, URINETOWN provides a fresh perspective on one of America's greatest art forms. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he's had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Inspired by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, URINETOWN is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, URINETOWN catapults the “comedic romp” into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter!
THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE
Music and Lyrics by WILLIAM FINN
Book by RACHEL SHEINKIN
April 18 – May 31, 2020
Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching story by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn (composer of FALSETTOS), this bee is one unforgettable experience. An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents (all portrayed by adult actors) vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life-unaffirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! The losers get a juice box and a hug. And YOU may be called upon to spell a word – so be prepared!
GUYS AND DOLLS: A Musical Fable of Broadway
Based on a Story and Characters of DAMON RUNYON
Music and Lyrics by FRANK LOESSER
Book by JO SWERLING and ABE BURROWS
June 27 – August 23, 2020
Does anything need to be said about this classic? Considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, GUYS AND DOLLS ran for 1,200 performances when it opened on Broadway in 1950. It received nearly unanimous positive reviews and won a bevy of awards, including Tonys, Drama Desks and Oliviers. Set in Damon Runyon's mythical New York City, GUYS AND DOLLS is an oddball romantic comedy. Gambler Nathan Detroit tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer Adelaide laments that they've been engaged for fourteen years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler Sky Masterson for the dough, and Sky ends up chasing the straightlaced missionary, Sarah Brown. GUYS AND DOLLS takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong! With some of musical theater's greatest songs such as Luck By A Lady and I've Never Been In Love Before, you won't want to miss this one!
